Steel vs Plastic Air Coolers: Buying Guide
Choosing between a metal-body and a plastic-body air cooler? Check the cabinet, water tank and actual model specifications separately before comparing prices.
Guide updated 5 November 2026
Steel or plastic: start with the exact model
Neither body label is enough to choose a cooler. A useful comparison names the cabinet and tank materials, then checks airflow, dimensions, cleaning access and the terms of the sale. Pick a model that fits your room and daily routine, rather than paying more for a material name alone.
| Check | Metal-body model | Plastic-body model |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet and tank | Confirm the metal and finish for each part; ask whether the tank differs from the cabinet. | Confirm the plastic specification and the tank material; do not assume every part is plastic. |
| Care and placement | Ask how to care for the coating, joints and any damaged finish. | Ask about approved cleaning products and permitted sunlight or weather exposure. |
| Moving and fitting | Check the actual empty weight, dimensions, handles and wheel instructions. | Check the same measurements; a plastic label is not a weight specification. |
| Cooling and cost | Compare documented airflow, pads, electrical input and the complete model quote. | Compare the same evidence and inclusions, not just tank litres or body material. |
What do steel, GI and metal cooler descriptions mean?
A listing that says only metal leaves important questions unanswered. Ask the seller to name the cabinet material, tank material and protective finish. If it says GI or galvanized steel, confirm the specification rather than assuming stainless steel. Galvanizing uses zinc to protect steel against corrosion; the care instructions and condition of the actual finish still matter.
Do not transfer a coating-life claim for construction steel to an air cooler. Material descriptions alone do not establish appliance life, warranty coverage or resistance to every water condition.
What should you check on a plastic-body cooler?
Ask for the actual material specification and permitted placement. The word plastic does not tell you how a particular cabinet will respond to sunlight, heat, impact or cleaning products. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for use, cleaning and storage, and ask whether replacement panels or tank parts are available for that model.
- Inspect the construction: Check the tank, drain, panel fit, handles and wheels. Ask how to reach the pads and water tank for routine cleaning.
- Check the environment: Confirm whether the exact model is intended for your placement. Do not assume it can be left outside or exposed to rain because the cabinet is plastic.
Does a steel body mean better cooling?
Cabinet material alone cannot establish cooling performance. Evaporative cooling passes air through wet pads and works best in dry conditions with ventilation. Compare documented airflow with units, pad design and the manufacturer’s suitability guidance for the exact model. Tank litres describe stored water, not the area cooled.
- For the room: Record room dimensions, ceiling height, heat sources and the route for fresh air to enter and moist air to leave.
- For running costs: Confirm the appliance’s electrical input and use your own operating hours and tariff. Neither body material nor tank capacity supplies a reliable electricity-use figure.
Steel cooler price: compare complete model quotes
There is no dependable steel-versus-plastic price rule without named models and current quotes. Compare the exact variant, material details and included features. Ask for the total payable for your destination and separate any delivery or installation charges. Check warranty terms, service access and replacement-pad costs before choosing on purchase price alone.
- Write down both offers: Model and variant; cabinet and tank material; dimensions and weight; airflow with units; tank capacity; electrical input; included accessories; total quote and its validity.
- Resolve missing details: Ask for a specification sheet or written confirmation. Do not fill a gap from the model name, photograph or another variant’s description.
Ask about materials before ordering
Tell MoonAir the exact model you are considering, your room or shop layout, intended placement and whether you need a particular cabinet or tank material. Ask support to confirm any material or performance detail missing from the listing before ordering. The catalogue links in this guide are not a claim that a steel, GI or stainless-steel model is available.
An older model name or historical product URL is not confirmation of current specifications, price or availability.
FAQs
Which is better, a steel or plastic air cooler?
Compare exact models against your room, ventilation and maintenance needs. Check cabinet and tank materials separately, along with documented airflow, dimensions, cleaning access and warranty. Body material alone does not establish which model will suit you.
Is a GI cooler the same as a stainless-steel cooler?
Do not assume that. Ask for the exact metal specification. Galvanized steel uses a zinc coating for corrosion protection; a GI description does not establish that the appliance is stainless steel.
How much does a steel cooler cost?
Request a current quote for a named model and variant. Confirm its materials, specifications, included accessories and any delivery or installation charges. This guide does not quote a steel-model price or confirm current steel-model availability.
Does a metal cooler use more electricity than a plastic cooler?
Body material alone does not provide an electricity-use estimate. Compare the exact models’ confirmed electrical input, settings and operating hours, using your own electricity tariff.
Does a plastic body remove the need for cleaning?
No. Follow the exact model’s tank, pad, drain and storage instructions regardless of cabinet material. Switch off and unplug before cleaning or removing panels, and use only the cleaning methods the manufacturer permits.
